During the First World War the building became a munitions factory, while in the Second World War it became an Air Ministry 'shadow factory', producing canopies and propellers for the famous Supermarine Spitfires.
After 1945, the factory struggled to compete with pianos made in the Far East. In 1970 Chappell & Co was taken over by the Dutch firm Phillips Electrical, who closed the piano factory shortly after purchase.
The building was later acquired by developer Hallmark Property Group, who launched the ambitious project to convert the property into luxury apartments.
Stephen Lindsay, head of north London at Savills, which is marketing the property, said: 'This is one of the finest loft-apartment schemes to be brought to market in London for many years.

'What is exceptional and unique about Chappell Lofts is the exacting and continual quality of the restored and new architectural features throughout the scheme. This is a very special project and we expect interest from buyers from both London and internationally.'
Mark Pollack, director at estate agent Aston Chase, added: 'The distinctive history and the design-led interiors inspired by piano and Manhattan-industrial design creates a totally unique residential development for Camden and the wider area.
'The Club Lounge provides residents with a unique entertaining and leisure facility which they can use as an extension of their home and lifestyle.
'Loft-schemes of this quality are launched just once every decade and this rarity has made the launch of this project highly anticipated.'
