Luxury flats costing up to £2.8m go up for sale at ex-public school where Harry Potter movies were filmed

  • The Victorian Gothic buildings of Royal Connaught Park have been the location for 397 films and television shows
  • Its 1,400 square foot dinning hall was used as Hogwarts' Great Hall in the first three films in the Harry Potter series
  • Campus also used in St Trinians, Starter for Ten, Hot Fuzz , Children of Men, Eastenders, Spooks and Silent Witness
  • First 28 homes in the development now on sale, with prices ranging from £649,000 to £2.8 million

If you're a Harry Potter fan and dream of calling Hogwarts home, then this development could be just what you've been looking for.

Royal Connaught Park's 1,400 sq ft dinning hall was used as the Great Hall at Hogwarts in the first three films and its tower became Dumbledore's office in The Order of the Phoenix.

Now, the ex-public school's Victorian Gothic buildings have been converted into luxury flats, detached homes and townhouse.

Buyers could even play at being the schoolboy wizard and his pals, as the 'Great Hall' has been largely unchanged, and will be available for their use.

The tower used as Dumbledore's office in the fifth installment of the movies is also still there, but has been incorporated into one of the townhouses.

Other areas were also used as a backdrop for areas of Hogwarts.

In total the mansion in Bushey, Hertfordshire, has been a location for 397 films including St Trinian's, Starter for Ten, Hot Fuzz and Children of Men.

On the small screen, it has appeared in Eastenders, Spooks, Midsomer Murders, Judge John Deed and Silent Witness.

The Grade II listed building was constructed in 1903 and was the Royal Masonic School for Boys until 1977.

It then became the United States International University-Europe until 2007 but throughout this time the campus was used by Hollywood and British filmmakers, partly due to its proximity to Elstree and Pinewood Studios in north London.

Restoration specialist Comer Homes bought the property in 1998 and continued running it as a university for nine years.

The company started developing it as a top of the range residential complex in 2009 and is now in the final phase of the huge project, which will have 380 apartments and houses set in 100 acres of parkland.

Now 28 apartments, detached homes and townhouses have been put up for sale with prices starting from £649,000 to £2.8million.

Caroline Comer of Comer Homes said: 'Royal Connaught Park has a really interesting history to it.

'It has been used as a location for 397 films and television shows dating back to the early 1920s. There's too many to name them all but everything from Monty Python's Life of Brian to Eastenders and Little Britain.

'They did quite a lot of filming for Harry Potter here. The dining hall was used in the first three films then I think they replicated it in the studios and also filmed at another location in Oxford.

'The old school block, which is now called Devonshire House, they used in Order of the Phoenix when the headmaster goes up a winding tower behind the phoenix.

'The bit of the building they used is still there but it forms part of one of the townhouses now.

'For filming it was fantastic, you could do anything with it and it was very convenient for crews because it's so close to Elstree Studio.

'It's a phenomenal place and really breathtaking when you arrive in front of the big clock tower, which was used in St Trinians.

'People just look open-mouthed when they walk through the gate, the character of the place resembles Oxford or Cambridge.

'We've tried to retain as much of that character as possible. The outside of the main building is the same and we've retained a lot of the internal features too - the original staircases, windows, some original flooring, fireplaces and exposed roof beams. Basically, as much as we can.

'And a key thing we've retained is the dining hall which can be booked by residents for functions. It's a beautiful hall and still serves a purpose. We've already had a couple of weddings and bar mitzvahs.'

This spot in Colorado's Vail Valley is so picturesque that a family stopped at nothing to build their home here - even if it meant shelling out $1 million just on the driveway.

The Italian-inspired mansion, which has incredible 360-degree views across the mountains, has now gone on the market for a tidy $29.5 million.

Homeowner Dick Rothkopf, a former toy company chief, chose the location for the estate in 2008 because his family enjoyed hiking in the nearby hills.

But the property is so remote that it took two years, a team of engineers and $1 million to build the 1.5-mile driveway from the roadway to its front door, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The home, which is known as 'Il Podere' - meaning 'family homestead' - was built on 230 acres of land using materials collected during the Rothkopfs' trips to Italy.

It features a main residence with seven bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, three half bathrooms, an elevator and a gourmet kitchen across 13,000 square foot.

There's also a billiard room, a gym, an indoor basketball court and a home theater.

Outside is a pool with a spa and sauna, a pool house, a two-car garage and a tennis court, as well as a lake, a pond, a stream and stunning views.

There is also a 2,000-square-foot caretaker's house, with one bedroom and one-and-a-half bathrooms, while a separate barn also houses a loft and a bathroom.

And if the home itself doesn't offer enough entertainment, it's just 25 minutes from Vail's ski slopes, an hour and 45 minutes from Aspen and two hours from Denver.

The listing with Douglas Elliman calls the estate 'breathtakingly beautiful, tranquil, pristine'.

The family is leaving to build a home in Sonoma, California but plans to buy a smaller place in Vail so they can still make use of its slopes.
