The group of islands were once the tops of hills prior to the last Ice Age and have long been loved by sailors on the Sound as sheltered deep-water anchorage.
Now 23 of the islands are inhabited. Potato Island, apparently so-called for a group of potato-looking boulders near the shore, is one of the smaller Thimble Islands.
It measures just 1.1 acre and was once owned by the Stony Creek Oyster Company.
The islands intermittently attract attention from treasure hunters who believe they have unearthed a clue about the whereabouts of Kidd's treasure.

A spokesman said: 'Potato Island has no noisy, nosey neighbours, no traffic save a few passing boats, with views beyond those any waterfront home may strive to provide.
'Islands offer some of the world's most enviable vantage points and in the case of Potato Island you're close enough to the shores of Stony Creek to forget you're on an island, yet the 360-degree neighbour-free views provide such a sensory overload you will forget you haven't turned on the television in days, maybe weeks.
'If you are in search of that perfect, personal water-orientated oasis, grab your fishing pole or clamming gear and set out to meet your neighbours as they fly overhead or swim by.
'You can live life exactly as you like, happy as a clam, on Potato Island.'
